Having all kind of Physical devices like Mobile phones / Tablets for testing is obviously quite an expensive thing. Android Virtual Devices are replacement of these actual Tablets / Mobile Phones for Testing purpose. One can have all possible Devices with Latest Operating System, Screen Size & Hardware compatibility, for that you just need to Create Android Virtual Device AVD. Android Virtual Device is synonym to AVD, simulator or emulator.

 

 

Below are steps to Create Android Virtual Device AVD.

 

Step : 1

  • From Top Menu Bar go to Windows > Android Virtual Device Manager .

Step : 2

  • This will open Android Virtual Device Manager, from its right side click on ‘New’ to create Android Virtual Device AVD. This will open an interface to configure our new AVD. Set the following details in that interface as shown in Fig. below.

Detailed Specifications of above dialog for creating Android Virtual Device AVD

Field Name Description
AVD Name Name should be assigned based on screen-size, OS version, Model No. etc which makes it easy for you to recognize from list of several devices while testing.
Device Select any device as per Screen Size & Screen Density requirement for Testing your App.
Target This depends upon you App’s. requirement. (In general make it as high as possible so that we can support all possible OS)
Keyboard When you select this check box, you can use your hardware keyboard to input values into your AVD, if it is unchecked then a virtual keyboard will be enabled automatically when you need to type.
Skin Checking it will add control buttons like Volume,Power Button to your AVD
Front Camera / Back Camera If your App Requires Front Camera Support, select one from the options (This requires Webcam in your PC).
Memory Options – RAM As per App’s requirement. (Make sure that you give sufficient RAM, but don’t exceed your actual Computer’s RAM size e.g. if you have 1GB RAM of computer then don’t exceed 512MB for AVD)
Memory Option – Heap Heap stores data for your App. while running, if you provide less Heap your App will face Out-Of-Memory Exception
Internal Storage All AVD requires Internal storage for saving OS files, DB, installing Apps. etc. You should provide Internal Storage 200 MB or more
SD Card If your App. requires External Storage specify the size, else leave it blank.

 

 

Step : 3

  • After this a window will appear as shown in fig below. From here Select the Virtual Device and click on “Start”. Then from Launch Options Window Click on “Launch”.

  • This will start a new Virtual Device. During initial Booting AVD might take few minutes. After complete start-up of the AVD it will look as shown in Fig below. Click on the centre circle and drag it away from the centre to unlock the AVD, now you are ready with to work with your AVD.

Tip :

Whenever you want to test your Application, start your Virtual Device before some time since it will take time to boot. Also whenever you make changes and want to preview don’t close the existing AVD, just Continue in existing AVD.
